–We’re looking for something different–
The usual mindset of planners when thinking about how to make their next conference or large corporate event better than their last is to offer a new experience – physically and mentally. They know that event attendees not only want new content, but also a new environment, and often that’s a chance to plan an experience in a new city.
If Philadelphia was never in your list of top cities to plan a corporate event, here are a few fun facts that might make you reconsider why the “city of brotherly love” deserves much more of your attention:
- The birthplace of America!
- America’s first World Heritage City
- America’s 5th largest city by population size
- The 4th most walkable city in America
- LonelyPlanet’s #1 Place to Visit in the US
- TimeOut’s 6th Best City to live in
- Home to the world’s largest collection of outdoor public art
- The “Rocky” Steps!
- The Philly CheeseSteaks!
- The coolest speakeasy with a secret password
Getting Down to Business
More importantly, Philadelphia is one of the best cities to host a large corporate meeting, conference, or training initiative – primarily because of it’s rich culture, unbeatable convenience and friendly costs relative to its cousins in New York, DC, and Boston.
For Convene’s Fortune 500 clients, Philly is becoming a quick 90-minute train ride and easy meet-in-the-middle location for their NY and DC offices.
The Cira Centre location, which is directly connected to the Amtrak station, conference both offices in Philly for a lunch meeting and be back to your respective cities by dinnertime.
More Bang For Your T&E Buck
If you’re planning an overnight or multi-day conference, Philadelphia’s got plenty of experiential attractions to offer your attendees. The famous Rittenhouse Square is where you can experience some of the best dining in the US, with celebrities such as Iron Chef Jose Garces, Stephen Starr aka the Restauranteur of the year, and Marc Vetri, James Beard Award winner. Convene also offers up local samplings of gourmet food each day, with items such as peanut butter ‘Tastykakes’ and South Philly Italian Hoagie Bites.
To walk off all the fancy food, make sure that you plan to stroll through The Fringe Arts Festival, which is running through the month of September, the Honey Festival, the South Philly Sausage Festival and the separate but equally awesome Blues Festival and Jazz Festival. Not to mention the Oktoberfest’s (plural) held in blocked off streets or in one of Philly’s countless Pop-Up Beer Gardens.
One of our favorite Pop-Up Beer Gardens Spruce Street Harbor Park.
Character Meets Culture
First Friday’s in Philly was started in the early 90’s when a group of art gallery owners decided to hold an open house that was free to the public on the same Friday night. Since then, First Friday has become the city’s greatest arts appreciation event, where over 50 art galleries, studios and even tech startups in the historic Old City open their doors for a non-traditional open house (usually with light fare and libations) for a collective showcase of their newest creations. In addition, the ‘Art Museum’ neighborhood is an easy walking tour of the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Franklin Institute, and the Academy of Natural Sciences.
For a more ‘American history-buff’ tour of the city, visiting the iconic Liberty Bell and Independence Hall is a must. For the not so faint of heart, the Eastern State Penitentiary’s famous “Terror Behind the Walls” Tour runs through the 5th of November.
