Tiny, Moveable Office Packs Spacious Design in Small Package

Posted October 17, 2018 By Andrew Littlefield

When you live in New York, you come to appreciate efficient use of small spaces. To create a space that is not only beautiful, but also functional, in a tight area is no easy feat.

That’s precisely what Los Angeles-based Knowhow Shop pulled off with their Lighthouse office project.

When they needed an office for their own business, founders Kagan Taylor and Justin Rice opted to take the job on themselves (naturally). The space they designed and fabricated is small but feels much larger than its 154 square feet would suggest.

Natural wood across the floor, ceiling, and walls makes it a biophilic’s dream. A large window and skylight bath the space in natural light, and a high ceiling helps it not to feel cramped. There’s plenty of desk space for spreading out plans, and lots of storage to keeps things looking tidy.

Plus, Lighthouse takes flexibility to a whole new level. Not only is it small, but the entire structure is built on casters so that it can be moved around the yard of their property. It’s constructed out of light materials to make moving easy, and the whole project cost just $50,000.

“This is not a project that we would have been able to hand off to a contractor to execute, so we bypassed the normal methods of architectural products, and relied on the most experimental potential of our design/build model,” said Taylor and Rice. “We hope that future Lighthouses will become beacons for those searching for smaller sustainable buildings that embrace contemporary architectural design.”
