The greatest gift you can give yourself this holiday is perspective and to set a clear direction for the year ahead.

The fundamental question that we all need to answer is this: How do we get from where we are to where we want to be?

Take a moment to turn the pages back ten years in your life. How did you get from there to where you are now?

What challenges did you have to overcome?

What unfounded fears and apprehensions held you back?

If you could go back and give yourself advice, what would you say?

Would it be helpful if you listened to that wisdom today?

What goal do you have now that you’re not chasing? What’s the worst thing that could happen if you did?

What habits or routines can you break or improve? What excuses do you make for yourself that you need to stop making? What are you doing well that you should you keep doing? What do you need to do differently?

What’s really holding you back?

If your life was a story, what chapter did you just finish, what chapter are you on and what’s next?

How clearly can you visualize where you want to be 12, 24, 36 months from now? It’s easier to hit targets you can see and easier to go places that you’ve been before (even if just in your head).

This is my process for gaining perspective. I hope you’ll share yours.
