The first quarter of 2019 is in the books, and it was another record setting one for Convene. We’ve felt a big shift in momentum to start the year—after a year of exciting changes that saw us grow into new markets and introduce new products, we’ve got the wind at our backs and we’re picking up speed every day. That’s exciting for a lot of reasons, but the one thing I’m most looking forward to is the expanded ways we’ll be able to serve our customers and create unforgettable experiences for them. Now more than ever, Convene is the best place to work, meet, and host inspiring events.
Here’s a taste of what we accomplished in the first three months of the year:
Our real estate and design teams have been hard at work opening beautiful new properties in the Convene portfolio all over the country.
In Philadelphia, we reopened Commerce Square after an extensive renovation. If you haven’t seen it yet, make it a priority to book your next meeting or event in this beautiful space.
In New York, we opened our largest property to date at One Liberty Plaza—our fourth location offering both Meetings and WorkPlace products.
We’re also expanding in Washington, D.C. with two new properties coming down the pipe. These new properties will be our first in the D.C. CBD—an area we’ve had our eye on for years. You can read more about these new locations in the Washington Business Journal and Technical.y D.C.
And of course, we opened our doors in a brand new city, Chicago! 16 West Adams Street kicked things off with an incredible launch event, and we’ve been overwhelmed with the warm response the Windy City has given us so far.
We’ve also announced some new locations in the works for later this year. Our location at Brookfield Place in New York will be massive—about 80,000 square feet of meeting and conference space! Altogether, we’re on pace to reach our goal of bringing one million square feet of new space online in 2019, giving Convene clients a wide range of inspiring spaces to fit their meeting, event, and office needs.
New Members of Team Convene
We hired 81 new team members in Q1. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating our 500th employee, and now we’ve blown past the 600 mark. I’m grateful not because of the number itself, but the caliber of people that have joined our team in all aspects of the business. Special shout out to our incredible people & culture team for continuing to raise the bar for all of us here at Convene and bringing so many talented and values aligned people to the company.
Movers and Shakers
It’s not just new faces filling roles at Convene. From January to March, we had 57 internal promotions and transfers. That means 10% of the company was promoted or put their hand up for a new opportunity in the first quarter of this year alone! A big congratulations to each and everyone one of those team members—you’ve earned it!
Doing Well and Doing Good
I was so proud to see members of our team actively seeking opportunities to make a difference in their communities. We owe it to the communities we live and work in to make a difference where we can, and that’s exactly what some of our team members did so far this year. Q1 saw Team Convene volunteer to serve meals to people in need, climb skyscrapers to raise money for the American Lung Association, and break a sweat at Cycle for Survival for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
At the opening of our new Chicago location, we partnered with Poverty Alleviation Chicago to raise funds and awareness for their cause, including a $10,000 donation from Convene to help provide valuable services and resources for people in need in the Chicago area.
Partnerships have been a huge focus for Convene the last 18 months, and we’ve recently announced some exciting new partnerships that will enhance the experience for our customers.
Central to our mission at Convene is creating places and experiences that spark human potential and make the workday seamless for anyone who spends their day in an office or a meeting room. We’ve looked for points of friction or gaps in service and examined how we can smooth them out to improve the overall experience for our customers.
One such opportunity is the overall healthcare and wellness experience at the workplace. Taking time out of the day for simple medical care can be an impediment to seeking care—especially for people with caregiving responsibilities before or after work. Adding to those impediments is the frustrating experience of navigating insurance coverage. Sadly, many people with coverage will opt not to see their doctor for routine check-ups because of these barriers.
This is why we’ve partnered with Eden Health, a primary care and insurance navigation company for employers. Through the partnership, we will build 25+ new Eden Health primary care offices located within Convene’s footprint over the next 24 months, in addition to providing healthcare services to Convene’s expanding network of employees. The first Eden Health offices at Convene locations will open in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Los Angeles later this year. This will provide Convene WorkPlace clients access to a primary care doctor on site at their office, as well as have access to Eden’s insurance navigation services.
Another partnership we were thrilled to take part in this quarter was the Future of Storytelling—an installation that featured a pop-up Convene location, designed by our team and our friends at Design Within Reach.
The exhibition featured all sorts of cool installations like AR and VR storytelling, bringing in an impressive array of corporate executives who got to experience a taste of the Convene experience.
We also formalized our partnership with our friends at For Five Coffee Roasters, making them our exclusive coffee provider and café partner for Convene’s growing network of locations. As part of the newly cemented partnership, For Five will provide its signature coffee in every Convene location and will partner with Convene to open cafés in partnership with select landlord partners.
It seems like a week can’t go by without Convene or our team members getting some love in the press. In Q1, we saw Crain’s, Globe Street, Bloomberg, and more all feature Convene. I was thrilled to go on Cheddar to talk about some of our new properties, the Chicago Tribune made mention of our work in the Windy City, and our tech team got some great industry love!
Convene was named one of the “Top Ten Proptech Companies to Watch,” and a “Top Coworking Operator” by Connected Real Estate Magazine and National Real Estate Investor, respectively. Our Design and Construction team got the recognition they deserve: The team was featured in Interior Design Magazine for their work in our Downtown Los Angeles properties, and their work highlighting the Japanese concept “Kintsugi” at our Lower Manhattan HQ (101G) was featured as one of the “Top NYC workplace design trends of 2019.”
Delivering a great experience for our clients doesn’t stop outside the doors of Convene. We’ve long dreamed of creating a print publication that speaks to the values we believe in, and that dream is now a reality. Catalyst by Convene is the first issue of our print magazine, now available to anybody that wants a copy. The magazine features exclusive stories from award-winning writers that you won’t find online. Request your copy today!
No More Flying Under the Radar
We used to be a company that could operate under the radar, but that’s not the case anymore. I’m continually struck by the change in conversations I’m having now as compared to 18 months ago—no one asks me, “What does Convene do?” anymore!
That market awareness is100% a product of the passion, hard work, and commitment of our entire team. High expectations bring out the best in us and we’re working hard every day to improve what we do and how we do it, so we can continue to exceed the expectations of our clients and partners.
