Amazon HQ2 Reportedly Heading for NYC, DC-Metro

Posted November 6, 2018 By Andrew Littlefield

Amazon’s year (plus) long, cross-country search for a home for its second headquarters may be finally coming to a close, and New York City and the D.C.-Metro area may share the honors.

As first reported in the New York Times, Amazon has chosen to split the 50,000 employee HQ2 between both Long Island City in New York and Arlington, Virginia outside of Washington, DC. NPR confirmed the Times reporting on Arlington through their own sources Tuesday afternoon.

The move comes after months of jostling between dozens of cities for the attention of Amazon. Last October, New York City, with the assistance of the NYCEDC, unveiled their pitch to Bezos to the public, highlighting four neighborhoods that met Amazon’s list of requirements. Long Island City, a neighborhood in Queens experiencing explosive growth, offers over 1.5 million potential workers within a 45-minute commute.

Arlington, Virginia offers a host of benefits for the company as well, including close proximity to the federal government and environmental bona fides.

Thus far, the company has remained tight-lipped on the reports.
