Downtown Los Angeles Shines in Annual Eater Awards

Posted December 6, 2018 By Andrew Littlefield

Downtown is quickly becoming the epicenter of LA’s culinary scene.

DTLA establishments took home the top prize in four of the five categories in food magazine Eater’s annual recognition of the best restaurants in the Los Angeles region. One restaurant, Bavel—located in the Arts District—took home national recognition for “Restaurant Design of the Year.”

“The first thing anyone walking into white-hot LA dining destination Bavel will notice is the plants. Vines of pothos cascade from a hanging steel structure, an explosion of greenery that fills the large ceiling space and creeps down, tendril by tendril, over the guests and staff moving throughout the room. As a lover of houseplants and a noticer of dead ones, I was struck — and totally won over — by the beauty, vitality, and sheer scale of it.”

Bavel was also awarded restaurant of the year for Los Angeles, proving it’s got more than just good looks to offer. And the best news, for meeting planners—Bavel has also been recognized for their ease of group dining.

Over on South Spring Street in the historic Alexandria Hotel, cocktail bar and restaurant The Wolves took home the local prize for “Design of the Year.” The bar serves up house-produced liquors in a Parisian salon-style space that makes use of authentic European antiques.

Just outside the Downtown core, Porridge & Puffs won “Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year,” a new category in the awards. Eater editors called out the restaurant’s “inventive” menu that offers fresh ingredients at a reasonable price.

World-renowned chef David Chang’s finally opened a restaurant in LA earlier this year and was awarded “Sensation of the Year” by Eater. Dubbed the “hottest table in LA,” Majordomo is delighting diners north of Chinatown in DTLA.

Between the hot dining spots and growing list of unique entertainment, Downtown Los Angeles has all the makings of a destination spot for meetings, conferences, and events. Check out full coverage of the awards over at Eater.
