Tell us a bit about your event: What is the event title, industry focus, event numbers, and objectives?

Rowe: Brand USA Travel Week U.K. & Europe focuses on bringing together key players in the travel industry to drive visitation to the United States. The event sees U.S. exhibitors (destinations, attractions, ticket suppliers, etc.) and U.K. and European buyers (tour operators) and media, meeting for a week of B2B meetings, networking, and educational sessions. Our guests also include speakers, sponsors, and other key individuals in the industry, amounting to approximately 950-plus attendees across the week.

Why did you choose etc.venues County Hall again for your event venue, and were there any specific aspects of our venue or services that made you choose us over others?

Rowe: We have had a series of absolutely wonderful event managers, and particularly working with Gemma Robbins [senior taskforce event planning manager at etc.venues County Hall] has been a dream. The staff always ensures the event runs seamlessly and thinks of solutions before we’ve even identified the issue, so that on the day, everything runs smoothly. The food is also impeccable!

Rowe: The venue is perfect for branding and making the space your own. There are plenty of bathrooms, and the digital signage outside each room is ideal. The decor is classy and simple to ensure it matches with any event and also promotes cohesiveness throughout the venue — plenty of furniture, e.g,. matching trestle tables for our B2B meetings.

Adelson: Generally, the décor added to the elevated, bespoke element of the event; plentiful coffee stations (which ALWAYS get rave reviews from attendees) and restroom locations are appreciated; plenty of spaces to spread out and meet our needs. For the B2B component, having to activate so many different rooms was challenging for the meetings element of the event, but overall, loved the space. Wish there were more large spaces like the Waterloo Suite.

Did you have any specific requirements or a vision for your event?

Rowe: The ability to brand the space and make it our own.

Adelson: The vision was to provide a tailored, comfortable, elevated event experience to event attendees, which etc.venues County Hall and the team provide.

How was your experience with our on-site services, such as in-house catering, audiovisual (AV) equipment, or other vendors?

Rowe: Yes, we used the in-house catering, AV, and branding team. This was great for ensuring easy communication amongst all aspects of the event. The food was delicious and has been positively commented on by guests every year. Amir and the AV team are so lovely and easy to work with, and quick to respond to last-minute changes. This was the first time using the on-site branding team, which worked brilliantly in terms of accurate measurements, speedy application, and the correct materials being used that didn’t peel off the walls, but also didn’t mark the venue.

How would you describe your experience working with the etc.venues event planning and sales team?

Rowe: A true delight. The team has always been so helpful and professional. We have really created a good bond with everyone over the years, and that has also helped with our event, as they know how everything works now and bring suggestions for logistical improvements for the next year.

Adelson: Very positive! The whole team has been a pleasure to work with, and it helps having developed some relationships over the years. Rowe: Having such good knowledge of the event and also being ready to solve any issues that arose, and adapting to any timing changes on the day. They had great communication with us and with each other.

Adelson: The team was great at planning for eventualities to ensure a smooth on-site event experience. They were well-prepared, checked in regularly, were available and responsive; they ensured a smooth experience for all attendees.

What was the most memorable part of your event at etc.venues County Hall?

Rowe: The great staff!

Adelson: Seeing it all come together and having the branding be successful. This was our first time using a new branding vendor and using etc.venues' in-house team.

The client used to have an old branding vendor and each time there were issues, like the artwork would peel off the wall or the measurements were not accurate. This year through myself and our tech manager we completed all the branding, remeasuring the venue ourselves to ensure each piece would be accurate to its location and oversaw the installation process. Our enhancement program allows clients to streamline the process of sourcing branded solutions, and we make partner with the experts to ensure a positive experience.

A dominant trend emerging from recent discussions, particularly at IMEX America in Las Vegas, is the escalating client demand for experiential events. A major topic of conversation at our IMEX booth was the demand for more personalized experiences with a particular focus on bespoke coursed dinners. This complemented the announcement of The Mallory at Terminal Warehouse, our newest independently branded venue, designed to deliver on this need and align with the expectations of a high-profile gathering.

The multi-brand approach, once reserved for hotels, is moving beyond standard gatherings to incorporate personalized, high-touch experiences, with a growing interest apparent from the trade show centered on gala dinners, wedding celebrations, award ceremonies, and annual celebrations. This trend of experiential and bespoke events underscores the value of CHG's multi-brand strategy and our intentional effort to segment our portfolio to meet diverse event needs.

Not only that, but we're putting it into practice, most recently holding a client appreciation dinner with curated menus, detailed decor, and anticipatory service at etc.venues County Hall in London, a historic venue overlooking the Thames. Many of the clients we spoke with at IMEX America are looking to elevate their events by incorporating more personalized experiences, with a particular focus on VIP dinners. More hinges on an event planner’s ability to design and deliver memorable experiences that elevate both corporate and celebratory occasions.

Our stakeholder conversations remarked on how design and atmosphere together foster a sense of occasion. It’s clear that creating memorable moments is becoming a key priority across the events industry, and CHG is excited to partner with clients to ensure we deliver on this.

Challenging the Standard: Unique Venues for Next-Generation Medical Meetings

At Convene, I've observed a clear trend: next-generation product launches, regional medical sales meetings, and educational symposiums are increasingly centering impact as their main objective. This not only contributes to immediate satisfaction but also improves post-event content retention, both of which are crucial for a planner's return on event.

A highlight of the invigorating IMEX 2025 week in Las Vegas was Meeting Professional International (MPI) Smart Monday. I was honored to participate in a panel discussion called ‘Unique Venues for Medical Meetings,’ an event that was part of MPI's Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate and Medical Meeting Professional certification courses. Panelists included industry leaders, including Brian Macaluso at Sonesta, Shawna Riggs at Tampa CVB, Aubrey Arreola at Viticus Group, and Andrea Rice with MPI Academy. Moderated by Cheyenne Nelson, Director of Strategic Accounts at MGME, we spoke to medical meeting planners about the importance of shifting medical meetings from typical venues to more experiential and unexpected locations. 

The discussion highlighted the importance of choosing inspiring locations where design elements, such as natural light and visual storytelling, can enhance the on-site experience. This not only contributes to immediate satisfaction but also improves post-event content retention, both of which are crucial for a planner's return on event. Medical meetings are highly standardized for compliance reasons and, therefore, quick to be placed in unimpressive and unassuming sites such as airport hotels with grey or beige meeting rooms or back rooms of chain steakhouses. The panel session was fun because it challenged meeting and event planners to consider venue selection from a fresh perspective.

The medical panel discussion tied into a wider theme throughout the week at IMEX: the desire to make moments matter more through the coming together of people in unique spaces supported by thoughtful hospitality. This was demonstrated powerfully at SITE NITE North America, where hundreds of us networked on Monday night. The event was held at The Industrial, a former warehouse and parking lot turned unconventional event space. The venue's inherent story of transformation and focus on creating atmosphere through a throwback ‘90s theme made it a destination event, despite other more logistically convenient spaces and plenty of competing events happening.

IMEX Las Vegas proved these aren’t just Instagrammable moments; these are moments that matter. Selecting a unique venue and creating an immersive experience. Taking the steps to build an emotional connection and make a lasting impression. Distinctive environments and immersive activations break the pattern and monotony of a blurry calendar of uninspiring events, making your event, your content, and your people all stand out as memorable exceptions, which is what we’re all after as event organizers.

The Hidden Cost of Uniformity: Why Planners Are Choosing Intentional, Full-Service Venues

We’re observing a significant shift in the meetings and events landscape, driven by an attendee-led demand for experiences that are both more authentic and more stimulating. For decades, hotels have remained the default venue choice, primarily due to the logistical convenience of co-locating lodging and meeting space. However, this model is beginning to show its limitations, forcing stakeholders to re-evaluate the true cost of convenience.

I often hear how this uniformity results in an experience characterized by "hotel fatigue," where attendees, confined to windowless conference spaces and generic environments, sacrifice a connection to the city they're visiting. The feedback is increasingly clear: Events that feel the most energizing and productive take place in environments intentionally designed for collaboration, not just adapted for it.

This move away from the traditional, generic ballroom is a strategic response to two key issues. Attendees are seeking an experience that encourages immersion: the ability to step out for a coffee at a local shop, interact with the neighborhood, and feel a genuine connection to the event's location. This authentic, location-driven experience is what the insulating hotel environment suppresses. Also, beyond generic design, planners continue to grapple with the lack of creative control and high, non-negotiable costs associated with mandatory in-house services, like AV technology and any food and beverage.

I reached out to Jonathan Young, senior vice president at ConferenceDirect, to bring in additional industry perspective. Young shared that this is not just a preference; it’s a strategic requirement. His clients are increasingly looking for venues that "reflect their purpose and enhance the event experience."

I’ve found that planners are expressing a desire for the best of both worlds: an elevated, purpose-built meeting environment coupled with flexible, convenient—but separate—overnight options. This decoupling of meeting space and accommodation is redefining value. By selecting a venue-only space, event planners and decision-makers gain creative control, cost flexibility, and most critically, the ability to deliver a more dynamic and memorable experience that inspires creativity and reflects the event’s purpose. The value of true connection and unique environment is beginning to outweigh the value of mere proximity.

Forget the idea of a single genius in the kitchen—Convene’s menu is built on a dynamic process with a task force of chefs sharing ideas. The result is what Chef Gallagher describes as a "mish-mash of individuals pulling the best parts out of multiple dishes that becomes one dish." This philosophy is evident in nearly 95% of our menu, which reflects a dynamic and continuous back-and-forth dialogue between Gallagher and fellow chefs at Convene. During twice-annual menu development, the culinary team refines ingredients and dish components, leveraging diverse perspectives to ensure the final creation is greater than the sum of its parts.

Take, for instance, the yuzu kosho-marinated La Belle Farm chicken breast dish. La Belle Farm is a fourth-generation poultry farm in upstate New York, and a long-time partner for our culinary team. Yuzu kosho is a salt-cured condiment made with chili peppers and yuzu citrus; it originated in Japan and benefited from cross-cultural influences. The Convene take employs a straightforward yet innovative technique: we use fermented yuzu citrus and chili paste to create a vibrant rub for the chicken. This not only imparts a unique depth of flavor but also tenderizes the meat over one week. The dish is then finished with a delicate drizzle of yuzu glaze, adding a bright, zesty counterpoint to miso tahini-roasted boniato sweet potatoes.

“This thoughtful combination of familiar and lesser-known elements allows us to offer an experience that is both adventurous and satisfying for our diverse clientele,” says Gallagher. “Ultimately, we aim to create dishes that are interesting and innovative, yet still appeal to a wide spectrum of palates. This deliberate choice allows us to honor culinary traditions while simultaneously exposing our clients to unexpected flavor profiles.”

This includes our wellness-inspired dish developed with our partners at goop, the Gwyneth Paltrow-founded lifestyle brand: smoky and spicy cauliflower. Autumnal ingredients include kale and romaine, crispy chickpeas, and lemon-dill marinated cucumber, all paired with a tahini-lemon vinaigrette. The vegan and gluten-free dish is satisfying for a range of dietary needs.

Heritage is integral to our seasonal squash dishes

An autumnal menu wouldn’t be complete without some hearty squash dishes – a range of seasonal vegetables that are both warming and energizing in equal parts. 

Sous Chef Kai Day at Convene 1201 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia, developed a mouthwatering entrée consisting of pomegranate-glazed squash, cranberry hominy, wilted spinach, and pepita kanuchi. Hominy is dried corn kernels softened in an ancient technique for easier digestion. The staple ingredient for South American and Mexican cuisine is then mixed with kanuchi, a Cherokee delicacy made from ground hickey nuts, to form a texture that could be compared to grits.

“My Cherokee heritage inspired the kanuchi and squash entree,” Day explained. “It’s a way for me to celebrate my lineage and bring more obscure native cuisine to the forefront of the culinary world here at Convene.”

One squash dish that appears on both U.S. and UK menus is an entree salad that also brings peak fall vibes: spiced squash and red lentil mulligatawny salad. Mulligatawny is a style of robust soup developed in Southern India, said to appease the British tradition of a soup course, and made popular in England. Mulligatawny was originally made with warming spices, ginger, cream, and fragrant rice. The Convene approach involves a surprising yet comforting spiced squash, red lentil flavored to echo mulligatawny, as well as ginger, scallion, and cilantro herb dressing. Our reinterpretation of a soup into a sauce uses indigenous ingredients to the Americas, such as pumpkin seeds, hominy, and squash.

The maple-glazed roasted butternut squash on the UK menu has also quickly become a seasonal favorite. Guests enjoy the natural sweetness of the squash, enhanced by the maple glaze, perfectly balanced with the savory bite of olives and earthy cavolo nero. The pumpkin seed brittle adds a delightful crunch, which is "the perfect finishing touch.”

Comfort and craveability: UK seasonal standouts bring balanced flavor

Regionality is key for Convene menus to incorporate local ingredients and speak to regional flavors. Executive Head Chef Marek Dabrowski at Convene Sancroft, St. Pauls in London, is quick to highlight some of this season’s must-try dishes on the UK menu. “The five-spice and ginger chili-glazed chicken has quickly become a seasonal favorite,” says Dabrowski. “Guests love the balance of sweet ginger glaze with tender chicken, fluffy jasmine rice, and crisp spring vegetables. Many have commented that it’s ‘comforting yet light’ and a dish they’d happily have again.”

The roasted pumpkin salad has been a standout choice on the Fall-Winter Menu (Autumn-Winter across the pond). “The hearty mix of rocket, kale, beluga lentils, and fava beans is perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the pumpkin and the crunch of the crust,” says Dabrowski. The coriander vinaigrette dressing ties the hearty greens and legumes together with a fresh, vibrant finish. The veteran chef describes the salad as a dish that “feels both wholesome and satisfying.”

Dessert can often include a compromise, or stalemate, for anyone who avoids dairy. Guests to Convene are in for a sweet surprise with the plant-based banoffee pie pudding, which is vegan and doesn’t include gluten in its ingredients. Layers of rich banana and toffee flavors are complemented by a creamy plant-based base made from lentil protein and coconut, satisfying a sweet tooth without compromise. “Clients have described it as ‘a perfect balance of sweet and light’ and often mention they can’t believe it’s vegan,” says Dabrowski.

To round out the chef selections, the executive head chef praises the Siam beef steak salad for its vibrant flavors and refreshing balance. “Tender beef pairs with crispy rice noodles, creating a wonderful texture contrast, while the Thai basil, carrots, and napa cabbage keep it light and colorful,” says Dabrowski. “Guests especially love the bold tamarind–chilli–lime dressing.”

Cohesive balance: A biryani’s pursuit of the perfect flavor equilibrium

Convene's sunchoke and carrot biryani, developed by Executive Chef Michael Redding, is a delight to see and to taste.

Executive Chef Michael Reddin at Convene One Boston Place in Boston's Financial District explains that the sunchoke and carrot biryani was crafted to deliver a harmonious and deeply satisfying experience. Drawing inspiration from South Asian cuisine, this biryani incorporates traditional basmati rice and is layered with the sunchoke and carrot vegetables. The brilliance of this biryani lies in its thoughtfully selected complementary flavors, each component working in concert to elevate the dish's overall impact.

At the core of the biryani's appeal are the robust sunchokes and sweet carrots. These root vegetables are not merely supporting ingredients; they are stars in their own right. The sunchokes offer an earthy, slightly nutty flavor and a firm, almost potato-like consistency, while the carrots provide a natural sweetness. Together, they create a wonderfully varied mouthfeel.

The cilantro-mint chutney brings a bright flavor that pairs well with the complex yet comforting blend of aromatic South Asian spices. A key element is the accompanying coconut yogurt sauce, which serves as a counterpoint to the robust spices. The culmination of these balanced ingredients is a dish that achieves a cohesive and delightful equilibrium.

“A coconut yogurt sauce brightens the rich spices, while the robust sunchokes and carrots contribute significant textural depth,” Reddin explains. The chef also cites its warmth and heartiness for providing a comforting and satiating experience, particularly suitable for colder seasons: “The dish is enriched with complementary flavors that enhance its vitality.”

A vegan masterpiece: eggplant transforms into a center-of-plate craveable dish

Executive Chef Darnell Lane at Convene 30 Hudson Yards in New York City selected one of his favorite vegetable creations, the espelette-spiced eggplant with cauliflower pilaf. “This dish is a perfect illustration of how plant-based cuisine can be both deeply satisfying and dynamically flavorful,” says Lane.

The dish achieves this intricate balance beautifully. The eggplant is cooked slowly with shallots, garlic, and herbs until it reaches a rich tenderness that provides a hearty, protein-like substance. This is perfectly complemented by the cauliflower rice, which gets a surprising touch of sweetness and freshness from the addition of raisins and a subtle spice. The dish is then complemented with chermoula, a North African sauce made with fresh herbs and spices like paprika and cumin. The interplay of textures—the creamy eggplant against the slight crunch of the cauliflower paif—is what truly makes this dish memorable.

Lane's philosophy centers on selecting vegetables that can hold up to complex flavors. "Whenever I think of creating a balanced vegan dish, I always think of vegetables that can absorb other flavors easily, flavors that can hold sweet, salty, heat,” says Lane. “Having bites of crunch through the dish creates texture that plays with your mind. Something fun and exciting when eating will always be undefeated in my eyes."

It’s a compelling, craveable meal that leaves guests feeling satisfied but never weighed down. As Lane explains, "This might be one of the best dishes you can have without having to worry about feeling heavy after eating.”

AI also enhances accessibility for attendees with hearing impairments or those who prefer to review content after a demonstration. It can generate instant captions for live presentations and comprehensive transcripts of sessions without adding tasks for event planners to perform.

Implementing AI isn’t without hurdles, as I have seen firsthand when planning events in the UK. Here are some of the top challenges when using AI for event planning.

• Protecting brand and client privacy: GDPR compliance for businesses is a strict requirement in the UK. At CHG, we approach handling attendee data with AI with robust security protocols and transparent data usage policies. Trust is paramount.
• Alleviating fears around job security: While AI automates certain mundane tasks, it also creates new roles requiring different skill sets. Event planners and businesses alike should focus on upskilling teams to increase efficiency and expand capabilities that might have been too costly or time-consuming if performed manually. 
• Brexit Implications for UK events: Navigating data flow and other potential complexities is essential for tech providers based outside the UK when international events are hosted there. Nevertheless, AI can streamline cross-border collaboration and communication, effectively bridging these gaps.

In 2009, I co-founded Convene under the premise: what if you ran an office building like a boutique hotel?  Over the past 16 years, we’ve not only brought hospitality into commercial real estate assets, but have grown into the single largest provider of dedicated meeting and event venues in the U.S. and UK, introduced premium flex offices to the market, and established a global, multi-brand organization. 

Today, we chart a new chapter with the formation of Convene Hospitality Group (CHG), the parent company uniting Convene and etc.venues. This strategic move leverages our combined strengths, expertise, and market reach to better serve our clients and partners in more places and exciting new ways.

Focused on creating the places and experiences that bring people together, CHG designs, develops, and operates hospitality-driven destinations to host gatherings of all kinds — ranging from corporate meetings to immersive brand activations, multiday conferences, private dinners, and social events.  This is the culmination of our brands’ combined experience serving the meetings and events industry with a hospitality-first mindset.  We’ve listened to you — our clients — conducted extensive market research, and have constantly improved our approach to ensure we were meeting you and your clients' needs in a meaningful way.  

CHG’s multi-brand approach revolutionizes the meetings and events model

Research shows demand is growing for “third places” to host specialized in-person gatherings. According to a CVENT Planner sourcing report, around 66% of event planners expect off-site meetings and events to increase, with internal team meetings expected to account for 43% of all meetings.

The formation of CHG comes at a time when in-person experiences are more sought after than ever, and businesses are increasing investment in high-impact events to build culture and engage with their clients. There is something magical about being together in person, especially in a digital-first world. CHG provides a global platform of venues to make hosting events of all types and sizes seamless. Across brands, we employ a human-centric and anticipatory service model that delivers an exceptional experience for clients and guests alike.

Through our diligence, we uncovered multiple unique industry segments, ranging from tentpole experiential events and product launches to internal team offsites, and we are committed to creating brands and product offerings that serve the full spectrum of the meetings and events market.  Our vision for CHG is to design and cultivate environments where connections grow, organizations flourish, and every gathering fosters a sense of purpose.

CHG: a strategic next step years in the making

We’ve been marching towards a “house of brands” model since the 2023 acquisition of etc.venues. The addition not only expanded Convene’s global presence, but also filled an existing demand for venues catering to small and medium-sized offsites, trainings, and conferences. And we were proud to add an established UK brand to our portfolio, one that first revolutionized the meetings and events industry over 30 years ago by focusing on building vibrant venues with an effortless planning experience.

As a next step, we announced a thoughtful segmentation of the two brands in January 2024, with Convene properties focusing on larger, customized events and premium workplace experiences, and etc.venues on simple, turnkey meetings. To better serve our clientele and take advantage of the size and floorplates of individual properties, several venues were converted from etc.venues to the Convene brand. The repositioning allowed for clearly defined brand segmentation and greater clarity for our clients.

Convene placed a stake in the multi-day meetings and experiential events sector, like the Fast Company Innovation Festival, Financial Times Future of the Car, and multiple Adweek annual events. By designing and operating venues exclusively in Class-A buildings, Convene further elevated its flexible office spaces for established companies like goop and individual creatives alike. Its commitment to sophisticated design and state-of-the-art technology has positioned Convene as a preferred choice for clients seeking premium, full-service solutions.

etc.venues specializes in providing contemporary spaces built to host multiple concurrent small to medium programs, allowing clients to benefit from an elevated hospitality experience for value-driven offsites. CEO and Co-Founder demonstrates how to hustle

Convene CEO and Co-Founder Ryan Simonetti spent the day with the venue team at Convene 117 West 46th Street, including setting up a room and prepping meals with the executive chef.

CEO and Co-Founder Ryan Simonetti worked directly with the dedicated operations team at Convene 117 West 46th Street, reinforcing the company’s ethos of “1% better every day” professional growth. The day kicked off with some icebreakers, during which Simonetti spoke with pride about the growth of our company, his words filled with genuine joy and gratitude. Then, it was time to get to work, moving tables, chairs, and airwalls to divide the Forum for a 150-person conference.

Service Technician Alejandro Miyakawa reports that Simonetti proved to be a quick learner—transitioning seamlessly from powering down tables to heading to storage to bring up chairs, always ready to jump in and lend a hand. The CEO joked that all the preparation brought him back to the early days of Convene, and he obviously enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about each individual from the venue team. Simonetti then took the time to sit down with our event planning team, focusing on upcoming events and next steps to bring client requests to life, and meeting with the AV team, diving deep into each department’s work and brainstorming fresh ideas for improvement. He joined Miyakawa in a crash course on setting the buffet to ensure flow, safety, and proper labels for dietary restrictions. Simonetti then swapped out for an apron and chef’s hat, joining Executive Chef Patricia Arias and Line Cook Alexander Chin in the kitchen to showcase his culinary skills. The team ended Flip Day by enjoying the meal prepared by Simonetti and the culinary team.

“From the moment he walked through our doors, Ryan radiated excitement and curiosity, eager to experience and understand every aspect of what we do here at [Convene] 117 [W 46th Street],” said Miyakawa. In part jest, he added, “Ryan reminded us of the young dreamer who once set out to build something of his own.”

SVP of Sales connects expertise to day-to-day operations

Convene Service Manager Carlos Saldana Rivera mentored Convene SVP of Sales for a "Flip Day," curating snacks, setting up tables for an event, and preparing the buffet.

SVP of Sales Phoenix Porcelli spent the day with Carlos Saldana Rivera, service manager at Convene 237 Park in New York City, learning the intricate dance of preparing and presenting our signature chef-led cuisine. The day began with the creation of healthy Nourish snack trays, with a focus on upholding quality standards and managing inventory within budget. Following this, she assisted in setting up a standard breakfast buffet and prepared the event space, including powering tables, in anticipation of an upcoming event.

During the room setup, Saldana Rivera discussed the responsibilities of a service manager, from arranging seating for an event to managing buffet service. Porcelli imparted her wisdom about sales techniques, building client relationships, and more. The day concluded with a weekly Convene 237 Park team call, which included Phoenix’s guest appearance, and the creation of the service team's schedule for the following week.

“Her knowledge, passion, and energy were infectious,” Saldana Rivera. “I was able to learn so much about how the world of sales works and how it connects with how my service and operations world runs. I can't wait to implement everything we spoke about and continue to be 1% better.”

Chief People Officer gains a crash course in Convene technology

Convene Chief People Officer Margaret Rafferty learned about technology offerings at Convene 30 Hudson Yards with AV supervisor Andrew Lowrey.

Chief People Officer Margaret Rafferty worked alongside Andy Lowrey, AV supervisor at Convene 30 Hudson Yards, gaining a firsthand appreciation for the meticulous planning and seamless execution required for every event. Lowery gave Rafferty a behind-the-scenes look at their daily workflow: running lights, checking mics, and ensuring every room was ready for an event. As the portfolio’s newest property, Lowery and the AV team came together to run tests, as well as walk her through how to prepare the venue and ensure client needs are met on the day of an event.

Flip Day served as a practice run for the Convene 30 Hudson Yards AV team, particularly because Rafferty is new to the AV field. Our objective is to consistently guarantee clients a seamless experience, which is made possible by our on-site technology specialists. Lowery, who is stepping into a leadership role at the new property, said it was a meaningful experience to see Rafferty be curious, engaged, and genuinely interested in how the technology supports the guest experience. In turn, he took time to listen to Rafferty’s perspective and receive her thoughtful advice.

“I’m really grateful to Convene for making space for experiences like this,” said Lowrey. “Flip Day reminded me how powerful it can be when different parts of the business connect and learn from one another.”  

Flip Day provides valuable opportunities for professional growth

The goal of this initiative was not just to observe, but to participate and connect. This inaugural event is more than just a shadowing program; it is a core part of our company culture. It reinforces the idea that we are one team, working towards a common goal. It breaks down barriers and builds stronger bonds between our corporate and on-site teams. Most importantly, it sends a clear message: that we see, appreciate, and value the contributions of every single person who wears the Convene badge. The skills and dedication of our venue operations team members are what truly set us apart, and this initiative serves as a powerful reminder of that truth.

This P&C (People & Culture) initiative, which we are proud to announce will be an annual tradition, was a powerful demonstration of our commitment to every member of Team Convene and a testament to the value of every role.

Convene 360 Madison Avenue in New York City is one of our latest venues to undergo a full renovation and expansion, enhancing every aspect of the meetings and events experience. The location operated under the etc.venues brand before being redesigned and expanded into a Convene-branded venue this spring — a design refresh aimed to support increased client demand for event spaces in Midtown Manhattan and align with our anticipatory Convene brand standards. Today, the property spans a total of 68,000 square feet across three floors, accommodating up to 950 guests.

Convene designers Katie Timmerman and Emily Friedman reveal the complete design strategy for the Convene 360 Madison Avenue venue, detailing material selection and the influence of each element on the location's bold design.

About Convene 360 Madison Avenue

Initially launched under our sister brand, etc.venues operated the NYC meetings and events venue across floors four and five, connected by a central staircase. While the two floors underwent a significant renovation, we expanded to the sixth floor and brought all three levels under the Convene brand, addressing a substantial demand for larger event venues in Midtown Manhattan. Convene 360 Madison Avenue features 17 meeting rooms, including the Morgan Forum, which has the venue’s largest capacity at 330 guests and can be subdivided into three separate rooms via airwalls. Three gallery spaces on each floor are designed for networking and food breaks.

“By thoughtfully layering in our signature design elements, we infused the hospitality-forward experience that defines the Convene brand,” says Convene Vice President of Design Katie Timmerman. “The result is a carefully balanced design that honors the success of the original property by bringing our brand to life through an intentional and elevated design concept.”

Convene maintains a consistent design approach across all venues, applying a refined, proprietary typology to ensure a uniform standard for our venues and each room type based on size and use case. This consistency ensures a reliable experience while also meeting the needs and requests of both planners and attendees. Our approach also embraces a bespoke design narrative for each venue, allowing clients ample opportunity to personalize the space for their events.

About the designer

Convene Senior Associate of Design Planning Emily Friedman is an interior designer with approximately eight years of experience in both the corporate and hospitality industries. Friedman acted as lead designer on this transition project in partnership with boutique design firm Marlo & Kroft. At Convene, she has designed expansions, new construction, and design refresh projects across the brand’s global portfolio. Her work includes New York properties Convene 101 Park, Convene 117 W 46th Street, and now Convene 360 Madison Avenue. She also recently designed the conversion of an etc.venues property into Convene 200 Aldersgate, St. Paul’s in London.

Crafting the Convene 360 Madison Avenue design narrative

All of our locations start with the development of our design concept, which we call a “design narrative.” The narrative – inspired by the trifecta of the surrounding architectural context, experiential overlay, and cultural interjection – informs each design decision we make, as big as the floorplan layout and as small as an accessory that goes on a snack shelf. This is not merely a theoretical framework but a dynamic principle applied across all Convene locations, though its specific manifestation is tailored to each venue.

Our design narrative for Convene 360 Madison Avenue is called “Living Relic Revolutionized:” Madison Avenue is in many ways a living relic for the evolution of architectural styles and societal influence on New York City. The design at Convene 360 Madison celebrates the powerful essence of modernity, juxtaposed with historical architecture, and influenced by Midtown’s legacy of cultural innovation.

One of the first architects I worked with told me that we always need rules; the “Living Relic Revolutionized” design narrative is our set of rules for this venue. Let’s explore how these three foundational contexts contributed to bringing this property to life.

Architectural context: modern juxtaposition

Every design narrative begins with a site overview that incorporates research into the building's location, including the history of the area and its surrounding architecture. Convene is located in 360 Madison Avenue, a contemporary glass skyscraper and Class A building. The streamlined facade is in conversation with other building styles on Madison Avenue, which exhibit how the approach to architecture has shifted over time.

The neighboring Grand Central Station displays classical Beaux-Arts symmetry. The New York Life Building, situated further down on Madison Avenue between 26th and 28th Streets, showcases Neo-Gothic embellishments as a skyscraper erected in the 1920s. Between 50th and 51st Streets, a group of Italian Renaissance townhouses, now known as the Villard Houses, is considered the epitome of New York’s brownstone architecture. Located directly opposite, St. Patrick's Cathedral is an example of Gothic Revival decadence thanks to a white marble facade, stained glass windows, and ornate twin spires.

The essence of our design narrative for Convene 360 Madison Avenue is a testament to this blend of influences, meticulously incorporating premium materials with a contemporary sensibility. A prime example of this integration can be observed in the detailed stonework at the Welcome Desk reception and the Nourish stations. These are not merely functional areas; they are points of interaction, designed to engage guests through tactile surfaces that convey a sense of grandeur and depth. The rich textures and intricate patterns of the marble and stone evoke a timeless elegance, simultaneously grounding the space in its historical context while presenting a modern approach.

At Convene 360 Madison Avenue, we created a dynamic environment that is both respectful of tradition and forward-thinking in its design. This duality ensures that the space is not only visually stunning but also deeply resonant with its surroundings, offering an experience that is both sophisticated and inviting.

Experiential overlay: Lotte New York Palace

Convene 360 Madison Avenue creates a contemporary, lavish environment inspired by the Lotte New York Palace, where high-end hospitality is unsurpassed. Hospitality is built into everything that we do. The Lotte New York Palace is a true icon among New York City’s luxury hotels for its exclusive experiences and tailored service. It also stands as a testament to architectural splendor and timeless design. A Madison Avenue jewel, the hotel was an expansion on the landmarked Villard Houses, first built in 1882 by a failing railroad magnate. The historic architecture weaves the elegance of old-world design with the comfort of a contemporary luxury retreat.

Inspired by the Lotte’s design approach, Convene 360 Madison Avenue also plays with proportion and scale to create an elevated environment. We used luxe materials for seating, fixtures, and design features to create a lavish atmosphere.

Consider the banquette seating area on Level 6, for example. Its deliberate combination of warm wood tones and captivating artwork doesn't just fill a space. This curated arrangement possesses an inherent magnetism, naturally attracting people to sit and collaborate. The rich texture of the wood provides a grounding element, while the artwork introduces a layer of visual interest and personality. Together, they create a compelling tableau that encourages lingering, conversation, and a deeper appreciation of the surroundings. It's in these subtle yet powerful vignettes that the essence of luxury — comfort, beauty, thoughtful design — is revealed.

Cultural injection: Advertising’s cultural revolution

The cultural injection influences all of the furnishings, which include furniture, decor, art, and more. Convene 360 Madison Avenue’s cultural injection is driven by the bold transformation of Madison Avenue’s advertising “creative revolution.” In the mid-20th century, Madison Avenue became the epicenter of advertising innovation, revolutionizing how products and ideas were sold to the masses. The so-called “Mad Men” era shaped tastes and culture in the U.S. through memorable campaigns and slogans in the 1960s. Many of these campaigns are still recognizable today for their striking iconography and colors.

Convene 360 Madison Avenue embraces the bold, innovative nature of advertising through unexpected uses of color, dramatic lighting, and a dynamic use of texture and print. Pops of jewel tones frame doorways or act as a complement to a ceiling recess. We also worked with Riggs Art Consultants to curate a few artworks that evoke a modern interpretation of the striking colors and images from a ‘60s Mad Men era campaign. Our furniture is also quite modern to accommodate the needs of meeting and event planners with infusions of bold, vibrant color and rounded curves for a fresh take on 1960s decor.

Elements of design

Marble Stonework

We always include a stone on the Nourish station, per our design typology, where guests can grab healthy snacks, coffee, and other drinks throughout the day. Larger venues, like Convene 360 Madison Avenue, offer more customization options for clients, particularly regarding the ability to include branding at Nourish stations. The Nourish plays an important role in upholding the standards of quality and aesthetics for our brand. As a designer, there are certain elements where I didn’t want to compromise.

This marble stood out as special to us when we looked through samples. We evaluated the different color combinations, textures, and natural veining or marbling. We visited a stone yard in Greenpoint, Brooklyn — a design consultant from Marlo & Kroft and I — to make sure we wanted this specific marble when we saw a large slab up close. Going to the stone yard is super fun; it’s the best. You have to keep an open mind since every stone has distinct characteristics, and they can’t guarantee specific sizes or quantities.

The deep forest green was integral to our overall color palette, bringing the right amount of depth and contrast, especially when considering our other materials. We are intentionally incorporating a spectrum of deep jewel tones, serving as bold interjections of color that draw inspiration from the equally audacious advertisements from the 1960s. This deep green is complemented with super light plaster, our standard oak, and a collection of warmer tones, achieving a balance of vibrancy and subtlety. Within this narrative, the green marble emerges as the jewel of the Nourish, offering compelling textural and visual interest that elevates the overall design.

Portal language

To distinguish the entrances to our main meeting rooms, such as the Hemsley Hub and Morgan Forum, we developed a "portal language." We aimed to create a sense of transition between the gallery and the meeting room by painting the doors a striking blue and using bold, tactile wall coverings. This blue gloss paint is also featured on the back walls of the Hubs and in the elevator lobbies, creating a vibrant effect throughout the venue.

Whenever our design team talks about finishes, we meet up in person to see everything. We specifically chose a saturated royal blue with a high gloss after looking at so many different colors. We sat with multiple blues within our palette just to make sure we were choosing the right shade. There are a lot of blues to choose from: Do we go more teal? Do we go more royal? Going more teal leads us towards the 1970s opposed to our cultural inspiration from the ‘60s “Mad Men” era, when rich jewel tones and Yves Klein’s intense ultramarine were popular. Convene’s saturated royal blue also complements the accents of red gloss paint to bring in opulence and highlight the curated vignettes.

Custom banquettes

What's interesting about Convene 360 Madison Avenue is that it's one of the first properties where we prototyped custom furniture. The banquette seating consists of individual modules that we designed custom to mimic a high-end sofa. This was a creative solution to get the exact look we wanted and to standardize some of our furniture pieces across our portfolio.

Functionality was a big driver, and then aesthetic-wise, we wanted Convene 360 Madison Avenue to feel like an upscale home where you would want to luxuriate in the space. To ensure our vision for the plush seating met our quality and aesthetic standards, we reviewed drawings and finishes to match the modern color palette in our design narrative, then went to the local manufacturer in Pennsylvania to see these prototypes.

It felt special to us that these pieces are also movable, instead of a fixed piece of millwork that we've done in the past. Event planners and other clients hosting in our venue often request the flexibility to adapt our rooms to fit a variety of events. Furniture that can be reconfigured and removed is our way to anticipate needs as hospitality providers. We really put a lot of heart and soul into the furnishings. Now we're trying to deploy them across our new properties. The finishes also fit into the modern palette of our design narrative, so they are a bit bolder and inject color into the galleries.

Accent lighting

All of the lights in the venue are custom-designed, with varying lengths for domes and pendants to create visual interest and adapt to each room. For example, an "eclipse" feature in the ceiling, originally lit prior to the renovation, has been repainted with high-gloss red paint to act as a focal point. Pendant dome fixtures add to the eye-catching feature and the grandiosity of the large dining and reception area.

The dome lights, present on all three floors, feature a unique shape and are made of a specific brass material chosen for its opulent appearance. It adds a sense of wonder and draws the eye upward. On Level 6, in the meeting rooms, guests may notice a beautiful brass fixture when they look up. A mirrored finish was considered but rejected for the meeting rooms due to its ability to be distracting. Ultimately, a brushed brass finish was selected to maintain the desired opulence without being intrusive.

While we were unable to modify the meeting room lighting on other floors, we successfully integrated the dome light design into the Level 5 gallery: The flush-mount fixtures seamlessly enhance the existing ceiling pop-up, a testament to our adaptable custom engineering for this bespoke architectural space. Despite existing limitations, the core design narrative remains strong.
